More About Capt. Rocky Versace
Photos from other sources
The bronze statue of Rocky with two children is based on a photograph taken shortly before his capture. The Friends of Rocky Versace collected donations to help meet the $300,000 cost to build the Memorial.
This photo was taken after Rocky had completed one year in Vietnam, and before returning there to meet his fate
Rocky Versace was captured by the Viet Cong on October 29, 1963 and was imprisoned in a bamboo cage the size of a coffin for 23 months. During that time he attempted to escape three times. He argued with his captors in French, Vietnamese, and English, refusing to make statements against the United States. For his patriotism and loyalty to his country, Versace was executed in September 1965.
